Defense Legend 4HD · Sci-Fi TD
Two heroes, a hill full of turrets and a Dark Force that comes at you from the sky, the ground and from under it. We played JoyUp's premium edition so you can decide before you spend.
01 — What it actually is
A tower defence that expects you to lose a few times and come back with a better plan.
Defense Legend 4 is the fourth entry in JoyUp's long-running sci-fi series, and it plays it straight: a fixed path, a handful of build slots, waves that escalate from scuttling drones to bosses the size of the map. What separates it from the endless pile of TD clones is the two-hero system — you're not only placing cannons, you're steering a pair of units around the field, dropping abilities where the pressure is worst.
The HD build on the Play Store is the paid edition. Same campaign, same maps, but no ad breaks between waves and no timers nudging you toward the shop. If you bounced off the free version because of the video ads, that alone is the pitch.
It is not a gentle idle game, whatever the store copy says about relaxing. Later maps ask you to hold three lanes with a budget that barely covers two, and the campaign gates progress behind clean runs. That's a feature if you like the genre and a wall if you don't.
02 — Feel it before you buy it
Holdthe lane
This little rig is our own sketch of the core decision the game keeps asking: which three turrets do you put down, and in what order. Switch them on and off and watch what leaks through. Frost alone never holds. Neither does raw damage.
← swipe the lane sideways →
// Built with plain SVG and 90 lines of JavaScript. The real game has a lot more turrets, and a lot less mercy.
03 — The loop
Fiveminutes of it
-
STEP 01
Read the map before you spend
Every level shows you the path and the spawn points up front. The bends are where your damage stacks, so the first thirty seconds are just deciding which corner is worth the money. Spend it all on the opening straight and wave six walks past you.
-
STEP 02
Mix roles, not damage numbers
Rapid-fire guns melt the small stuff, beams and rockets are for the armoured walkers, and slowing towers do nothing on their own but make everything else count twice. The game punishes single-flavour builds harder than most TDs I've played.
-
STEP 03
Drive your two heroes
This is the bit the series does differently. You get two hero units on the field with their own cooldowns, and they can be moved mid-wave. Parking one at the leak point while the other clears the back of the queue is usually the difference between a clean run and a restart.
-
STEP 04
Bank the upgrades between runs
Gold from finished maps goes into a permanent tree — range, fire rate, hero skills. It means a level that hard-stopped you on Tuesday is genuinely doable on Thursday without you playing any better. It also means the game leans on that instead of tuning the curve.
-
STEP 05
Then the boss shows up
Every few maps a boss rolls in with enough health to eat a full wave's worth of your damage. These are the moments the art team clearly enjoyed themselves — huge silhouettes, screen-filling attacks — and the moments where a hoarded ability finally pays off.
04 — What it looks like
Contactsheet
Official stills from the Play listing. The in-game camera sits close and reads well on a phone; the promo art is louder than the actual matches, which is fair enough — everyone's promo art is.
05 — The honest bit
Everything good about it, and the handful of things that will annoy you.
Holds up
Worth your evening
- No ads at all. The premium build never cuts a wave for a video. After the free version, the silence is genuinely noticeable.
- Plays offline. Full campaign on a plane, on the Luas, in a lift. No login wall to start.
- Real strategy underneath. Turret roles matter, hero placement matters, and there's a proper answer to most walls once you find it.
- Map variety. Desert, forest and ice each change the routing enough that you rebuild rather than repeat.
- Runs on modest phones. Chunky, readable art rather than a benchmark. Battery holds up over a long session.
Grinds
Fair warnings
- Perfect-score gating. The most common complaint in the reviews, and it's a real one: progress can stall until you clear a level cleanly on the hardest setting. Get stuck and you're stuck.
- Paid, and still has a shop. You buy the app and there are optional in-app packs on top. Nothing forces you into them, but it's a fair thing to be grumpy about.
- Store copy oversells "relaxing". It is a difficulty-forward tower defence. Lovely once you accept that, misleading if you came for an idle game.
- English text is rough in places. Menus and mission blurbs read like a translation. It never blocks you, but it's there.
- Updates have gone quiet. The HD listing was last touched in February 2022. Back up your save before you reinstall anything.
06 — Verdict
Buy it if you like being beaten by a puzzle
For the price of a coffee you get a dense, ad-free campaign with more tactical bite than its store page lets on. Knock a point off for the progression gate and the shop that shouldn't be in a paid game, and it still lands well above the mobile TD average.

“Game is pretty awesome, unfortunately you have to achieve a perfect score on easy, medium and hard before being able to move to the next level. [...] Pretty frustrating if you can't make it past a specific level.”
“So far I have been able to play every level without spending any money. Unlocks and upgrades are all available if you play a little each day. [...] Gameplay is perfectly balanced.”
